Two new elevating transfer vehicles (ETVs) delivered to Chengdu Tianfu International Cargo Terminal

Chengdu/Warburg, October 28th, 2021 - Lödige Industries accomplished the installation of two elevating transfer vehicles (ETVs) for a new automated air cargo terminal at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport in the capital of China's Sichuan province. Scheduled to start operation in 2021, the airport will have three runways, handle up to 40 million annual passengers and 700,000 tons of air cargo in phase one of the development. The airport will be a major transportation hub of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic rim and open a gateway for further opening-up.

Lödige Industries delivers a fully automated cargo terminal to manage the smooth and efficient flow of international, domestic and express cargo at Tianfu airport. The new cargo terminal features a five-level three directional automated ULD storage and handling system. The two ETVs serving the system, are the first such machines for Lödige Industries in mainland China.

In the course of the competitive tender process, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport Group travelled to Hong Kong airport to view the world’s tallest ETV, previously installed by Lödige at the Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT) in 2006.

The contract covers both the domestic and international cargo terminals of the airport, in addition to the special handling warehouse for dangerous goods and an express distribution centre. It also incorporates an international export goods supervision warehouse. In total the contract provides ULD and pallet handling equipment for more than 83,000 square meters of cargo facilities.

Lödige is no stranger to Tianfu Airport, where it was awarded a contract to construct the first automated catering storage and handling facility in mainland China by South West Air Catering, a year ago. The automated catering facility enables Air China to serve 40,000 meals per day on just 52.7 square meters of floor space.

Nicholas Tripptree, Managing Director for Lödige Industries in Asia Pacific, commented on the contract award at Tianfu:” These two projects coupled with the recent completion of the air cargo terminal for China Eastern at Shanghai Pu Dong airport, are evidence of our momentum in mainland China. These contracts are being won across diverse product solutions for the airport sector, positioning Lödige Industries well for long-term sustainable growth.”

Tianfu International Airport is designed by China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Corp. Ltd and developed by Sichuan Airport Group Co., Ltd. The main contractor is China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp. Ltd. and HUASHI Group.
